Episode 11

The thing is, We took a step back by recording at home again. This by no means affects the quality of our performance but editing was super hard. Hopefully, we’ll be back in the womb like Soma FM studios for 12. We have been watching movies at an alarming rate. My son has gone feral and is foraging in the yard while I take cinematic bullets for our fans while Matt rubs shoulders with the film fest going elite at this years “Another Hole in the Head” festival. We do it for you.

This episode is chock full of inaccuracies and mistakes, so sharpen your pencils and take notes, there will plenty of opportunity for “On Air No Prizes”. It is also full of the sharply crafted, silver tongued repartee you’ve come to expect from media professionals such as ourselves.

The Exterminator, The Violent Kind, The Losers are all disected. And the unexpected Rampage from polarizing director Uwe Bolle is covered. We do lose focus several times and all the background noise is provided by a fridge and Dexter, my son. We forgot to mention we were drinking giant cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon and Anchorsteam beers, if you are left wondering. Anyway...

...This may be a spoiler. But here we are, talking about movies. Actually, we were talking about The Local 303's(Josh Ellingson and Dave Garvey not pictured) opening at The Artist Xchange...but, we somehow we talked about alligator movies(Black Water) and Goodfellas anyway.

Happy 10th episode!

Episode 10 (cue emotional swelling strings), who would've thunk it. We're back with an extra long show full of the same wit and insight (or lack there of) that keeps both fans coming back for more. We run the gambit with with big Hollywood shoot-em-ups, fully franchised fright-fests, and enough other movie mayhem to clog the arteries of every studio fat cat that's earned a  screen credit.

We take a stroll down memory lane with our favorite movies from the year we were 10. The we tackle the flicks we've digested over the last few weeks. I won't lie, I am not at my best. But Matt more than makes up for with an impassioned commentary on the "Wrong Turn" trillogy. Then there's plenty of the usual incoherent babble and non sequiturs that are becoming our trademark style. Hope I haven't oversold it.

Episode 9, no bad considering the bender...

...we stay mostly on subject, with wild tangents thrown in. Plus, we got hella movies in. How? I don't know.

Recorded on a Monday(Like a Solomon Grundy) ...we both seemed to have a bender weekend. Jason had a birthday weekend(it was his sweet 16), so he got wasted....and me, I just like benders.
And that includes movies benders.
So Episode 9...hair of the dog.
That might explain why we forgot to do our obligatory new episode blog post.
Well, here it is now.

Some shit we get into includes... Gone With the Pope, Pontypool, The Escapist, Stepfather, 2012, and Times Square. ...Yeesh.

I'm totally mental the whole time...and forget everything. (Except that ID4 was a bad movie, and you are a bad person if you like it)
I forgot to tell you:

the specific shots in The Stepfather remake that are actually really good
that Congo was a the second feature at the Drive-In...and it's really a much better story.
Time Square is like Ghost World...and you fuckers loved Ghost World.

Skins Movie Confimed!

Yup, True Believers...believe it.
Not only do I love movies, I also love high-school teen dramas. (Degrassi, OC, 90210, Fifteen, Freaks and Geeks, So-Called Life, and Glee to name some Favs.)
AND...not only do I love high-school teen dramas. I love Brit-Pop. (Blur, Boo Radleys, Kinks, Black Wire, Art Brut, Crystal Castles, as some examples).
So it goes without saying that I am beyond super bed-wetting excited...when confirmed at March 21, 2010... The Skins Movie.

I did some digging and turned up this hot gem on OHNOTHEYDIDNT's live journal. Jack Thorne is writing it. He wrote some of my favorite stuff in Season 2. Also, the movie is gonna involve mostly the 2nd Generation of the show...which makes right fucking sense...I mean, the end of Season 4 is fucking MENTAL.

That's the way to end a series!
Specially if ya wanna follow that with a movie...a movie I wanna see.

Oh, and Nick Hoult(he was Tony in Generation 1) may make a cameo. That is if he's done with the filming  for Mad Max. So, I guess, that's news to me too. Nick Hoult is in Mad Max. Huh.

Episode 8, recorded at SomaFM!

It's late and I'm tired. There is a lot going on in #8. I can't tell if we are getting better or worse. It's fun to talk about movies, I guess that's enough. We were fortunate to have had the opportunity to record from the lovely offices of Soma FM. Hopefully, our quality will improve. It is unlikely though, because I still do the post production and am not exactly qualified to do so. The show opens with a particularly crisp can opening and deteriorates from there.

This show turns into the super hero episode. We have, thus far, avoided theme shows and only accidentally stumbled upon this theme through near stream of consciousness yammering. The permeation of the super hero theme is disrupted briefly to discuss the 70's psychedelic-horror film "House", deride fellow film goers and Jake Gyllenhaal and the Prince of Persia. The rest of the show is Kick Ass, Iron Man 2, Spiderman 3, and Punisher: Warzone.

Is it summer yet?

We stand at the edge summer waiting, wanting to be dazzled. Searching for respite from the heat in the cool darkness of the local "Megaplex". While we’re there how ‘bout some entertainment, some bombastic, flashy, escapist fun. We are ready for pretty people in fantastic situations in some exotic locales to do impossible things. Give it a pulsing soundtrack with a half a dozen hit songs by whoever is hot right now. Throw in some jaw dropping state of the art special effects. Oh, and don’t bother with story or character development. Please make sure you leave plenty of holes in the what little story you do use, so  in two years I can drop another twenty bucks to find out what’s gonna happen in part 3, two years after that.

The sad thing is that I fall for it. I am almost always disappointed. So I begin my trips to the theater by lowering my expectation. I fill up in the food court, pre-complain about the commercials and the ticket price and the jerks that talk during the movie and the blah, blah, blah, and then go in anyway. And by being so jaded and skeptical I can sometimes actually enjoy a slightly better than average film even though I can’t really remember much about it the next day. But is that any way to live? With previews, you are in that darkened room for three hours or more.

Maybe it’s time to make Hollywood aware. If we could just, as a people, skip some of the fluff. Let the powers that be know that we want to be engaged and given the opportunity to be involved with our leading men and women. It shouldn’t be enough to just sit and watch because it’s in Imax or 3D. Let’s face it, on a regular TV, Avatar will barely be okay. Pixar (with the exception of Cars) has managed to make a string of incredibly entertaining, visually stunning films. They have heart and soul. They draw you in and entertain as they do it.

I know that a lot of people don’t care. The Wolverine DVD sales are well above 73,000,000 bones, selling more than 24,000 copies this week alone. And that’s 32 weeks after this piece of cinematic shit plopped. Stop buying it. There’s better stuff to spend money on, like food. People are starving in the street and people are buying fucking Wolverine!? New?

Jeez. Sorry about that. I forgot to take my pill last night.

We here at fat and skinny are not above pure entertainment. We spend a lot of our day, and a good many of our nights, panning for gold knee deep in a river of shit. Nine out of ten movies are barely watchable. But that’s it isn’t it? I ask you movie fans, casual viewers, cinema aficionados. Is it this search that keeps us going. Is it as fun to revile a bad film as it is to lionize a good one? It is.

So here I sit. As I read what I’ve written it be comes clear that the bad ones make the good ones better. And as the waters deepen, as availability of the vast canon of movies find there way to DVD and OnDemand, cable and revival house we, I, will keep watching. There isn’t really any real point to criticizing a film. Someone will like it.
But that doesn’t mean we’re gonna stop. After all that’s a huge part of the experience, talking about it.
 
Matt’s at Motor City Comic Con in beautiful Novi, Michigan this weekend so check him out if you there. He’s always wrecked when he gets back. It should be fun. And when he does get back we’ll do #8. I actually saw some stuff that should be fun to talk about.

Also, I posted my top 5 monster movies over at the Facebook and got a lot of good feedback. Keep it coming. I know I forgot stuff. I want to talk about it on the show.
