FSGM 37 ...or Wang Dang Sweet Poon-Django

...How do you feel about consistent sound quality? Strong opinions? Any opinions? Well, in another Fat and Skinny first, we were actually able to change our recording style in the middle of the episode. Not just from episode to episode as or patiently loyal listeners have grown accustom.
...but, eh...what do you expect from free content that is recorded far beneath the earths surface in the Fat and Skinny Magma Resistant Movie Mausoleum. (Molten rock plays devil with our recording instruments). (Also, I am a robot)
Besides, you with not believe the cinematic diamonds that we dug up just for you!!!(And no, non of them were Mausoleum...unfortunately.)

First, we talk about Bond. There is some documentary out there on the subject... But, then we actually start talking about something really interesting...and by interesting, I mean nasty. Video Nasty.
The Deadly Spawn. Even when you see it. You won't believe it. And believe me, I saw it. And you can too!!! On YouTube!!!

...Oh!!!! and we talk about this years(or last years I should say) Punisher:War Zone...Dredd!!!!
Sack up and hold on to yer butts!

Dredd is a mother lovin' stone cold killa!!!
Speaking of killers, we got Killer Joe. Starring non other than MAXIMUM McConaughey.

...and just to round it out. We talk about the greatest all time killer of all time. Django! Played by non other than Jesus himself...Franco Nero. (Seriously, remember The Visitor?)

Doubt me? Body Count: 138

Why it's almost an all murder, all bloodshed episode. And if the sound quality really bothers you too much...you can always just listen to The Eagles.
(I hate the fucking Eagles)

~Stay Groovy, and we'll catch ya next time

FSGM 36

Despite the fact that QT's "Django Unchanged" is on every podcast about movies in the world, it's just too good not to mention, and mention we do. Jason squirms while he and Matt discuss the controversial  use of a certain word that will remain unwritten here, which Matt says a bunch. Don Coscarelli's latest offering "John Dies at the End" is given the throws Jason back to the 80's video store days when you had to actually discover cult for yourself. Matt continues his Orson Welles exploration with his review of "The Lady from Shanghai". Peppered with mention of other movies, trailers, and musings on the state of film, the conversation turns melancholy as Jason expresses concern over the well being of "genre" in Hollywood. Will he be okay? Can Matt calm Jason with his unflappable spirit? Tune in, and find out.

Enjoy,

Episode 35...back on the wagon.

Hey Hey! Welcome back Fat and Skinny fans. Episode 35 marks a new landmark in Fat and Skinny history. This is the first episode where we recorded from two separate, remote, locations!!!! Sure this technology has been around for a while, but our film fortresses only just got internet...so there ya go. Sounds pretty good all things considered...and let's face it, we really don't want you guys to grow accustomed to a certain style of recording.
This is also the episode where we seem to fall right off the wagon, but that should be fairly obvious right off the bat. And speaking of bats...wait, I'm getting ahead of myself.
First, we get into Season of the Witch (the Nic Cage version) If you ask me, we spend more time on it than it deserves. (That's one of the first scooby clues that we're loaded) However, I would say we were talking less about the movie, and more about Nicolas Cage, the man. We are into enigmas here at Fat and Skinny. If only Uwe Boll would direct a Cage video game, superhero movie. (With Ron Perlman...the newest FSGM movie crush)
(I'm saying watch the Romero Season of the Witch...and Knowing)

Cage may be a batty actor. That's why we love him. Speaking of bats...finally. We get to Chosen Survivors. The 1974 post apocalyptic, animal attacks film. With bats. It rules. It seems to have Panos Cosmatos fingerprints all over it.
The whole movie is up on Youtube. It was also teamed up on DVD with The Earth Dies Screaming. (Because both movies were written by Harry Spalding)

Harry Spalding did NOT write The Last Days of Planet Earth. I just happened to watch that movie after Chosen Survivors at The Vortex Room. It's a Toho production. I dug it. I was pretty boozie.

And to bookend with the concept of the right film for the right time...we present Pop Skull!(directed by Adam Wingard)The Southern fried, J-Ho, post-psych drug movie. The Ring meets Enter the Void...on 2000 dollars.

It's a wild one.

Yup, it's another signature episode alright.

Episode 34

WHOA! Listen to those mics courtesy of SomaFM. We just keep getting gooder and gooder still. Heck, at this rate, by next episode we'll be great. Until that time, you have this Gem Mint 10er  of marvelous movie madness to plug up yer ear holes.
I mean, we don't get all the facts right. And sometimes kinda forget the plot points of the film. But, that's because we saw that stuff over two weeks ago. And I ask you, how can you possibly think coherently about a Uwe Boll film when yer too busy thinking about the man himself. (Which is the exact reason that we are the affectionately known as 'little podcast that could'.)

Anyhoo, on to the movies/trailers. Obviously, we get into a little Boll. This time it's the 2007 classic In The Name of The King:A Dungeon Siege Tale. Some things we forgot to mention on the show. Ron Perlman. 'Farmer' is a boomerang expert. (Yup.) Plus, weird forest guardians. Seriously, this will turn your brain into Pinheads Puzzle Box.

And the not quite as classic In The Name of The King 2: Two Worlds
I only watched the first 20 and the last 10 minutes. Maybe that's how it should be watched. The in between bits can be cobbled together watching the trailer.
And then I talk totally incoherently about some old dusty movies. Like this one! I Bury the Living. (the original. Not the 2008 re-make?!?!) Two more things on this one....1. the caretaker did NOT do it. 2. Fuck Inception
Or this one...The Queen of Blood. It's got the Hop, man...the Hop!
Oh...and we talk big, big, Drive-In style action! Like Red Dawn.Yeah...the new one. I very well might stand alone on this one, because let's face it, it's kinda shitty. But, I liked it a whole heap anyway.
And last, but not least...MORE STATHAM!!! Now, I don't think that Statham is always a 'safe' bet...(see Bank Job) ...but, you can bet on Safe. Now take that to the bank.
...Directed by Boaz Yakin...whom I just read today had formed a production company Raw Nerve with Eli Roth, and Raimi pal Scott Spiegel.

Whadda world.

Episode 33, recorded live in a port-o-potty!

Matt exposes himself as a Noir fan, engorged with newfound love of several films he saw while attending the annual “Not Necessarily Noir” film festival held at San Francisco’s venerable Roxie Theater. Jason tries to keep up but remains unusually quiet while Matt weaves an intricate explanation of his interpretation of the genre.

Jason’s rally is a revisiting a duo of holiday blockbuster that were the Home Alone movies of the early nineties, launching a young Mac Culkin into superstardom. These films are not as Jason remembers them. And the new Van Damme entry in the Universal Soldier saga is scrutinized. While recommended, Jason sounds conflicted.

When that’s said and done, you get to hear the boys’ take on the state of things in film, namely, the recent Disney takeover of Star Wars!

Ooh, stimulating.

Enjoy,

FSGM 31

Jason finally faces his fears in this exciting edition of San Francisco's own Fat and Skinny Go to the Movies. One of the most terrifying images from his childhood was that of the potato sack covered face of the killer from 1976's "The Town That Dreaded Sundown". We here at FSGM are happy to inform you that he is doing okay, and talks about the experience for you listening pleasure.

We have a new hero here at FSGM. His name is Oliver Reed. He was a hard drinking, fist fighting, British actor who appeared in hundreds of movies and television shows. The sheer volume of his output is filled with some of the weirdest choices an actor has ever made. This little gem from 1981 is one strange trip. Part satirical farce, part horror comedy, it is filled with surreal sight gags, bazaar sets, wild make-up, and wacky special effects. It is currently available on Netflix streaming.

There is a smattering of other films mentioned, but you should go listen for yourself to find out what.

FSGM 30!

This is our time film fans. In these fertile past few years we have seen stunning developments in technology that feed us endless varieties of visual stimulation. One can simply pluck motion pictures out of the air and enjoy them any where, anytime on any one of a myriad of portable devices. Any thing with a screen has linked to the heavens to instantly satisfy our every whim. What’s your pleasure? Is it horror, sci-fi, romcom, torture porn? Simply log on and enjoy your favorite film from any genre, any era, at any time.

But wait! The vastness is overwhelming! Searching for hour after hour; too old, too new, too long, to tame, on and on into oblivion. We once had to make grand gestures to find our treasure. Waiting for film to come to us. Yet somehow the output of the film industry was manageable. Independent video stores’ shelves bowed under the weight of the clamshells waiting to serve the hunter the strange and fantastic in film. It was daunting, but we would perceiver. And often we did. For every Tequila Sunrise, there was an Evil Dead. For every Mrs. Doubtfire there was an Eve of Destruction.

Matt and Jason stumble. They fall into the black. And then there is nothing. An endless scroll of virtual box covers. The search for sanctuary seems feudal. Then, like a distant voice, only the faintest murmur sounds in the darkness. It withdraws, then surges, withdraws, surges. Lurching forward it becomes louder until it is deafening! Matt reaches out, grabbing Jason by the scruff.

“I know what must be done!” he exclaims.

From the heart of the Mission, like a beacon in the night, FSGM returns for the 30th episode. This time the movies covered are a cautionary tale of descent into the gaping maw of the internet. They are movies that are unnecessary for our listeners to digest. Not bad (The Hunter, 2012), not good (Hot Rod), but unnecessary. So join our heroes as they strive to discover that which is worth watching. Head their words and beware the abyss. They remain vigilant so you don’t have to.

The Hunter

High Ballin'

Hot Rod

and plenty more!

FSGM 29!

What do you get when you cross internet memes with 80's style action? "Bad Ass" is what you get. It's a better than you think it's gonna be fictionalized version of the Youtube sensation that is Epic Beard Man. You can hear about it, and a bunch of other stuff, in the latest episode of the little movie podcast that could.

No matter how long they are apart, Matt and Jason just fall right back into the groove. Recorded in the beautiful Soma FM studio, eppy 29 offers you a dangerous combination of witty repartee and hard hitting observation that has garnered Fat and Skinny their tiny but devoted fan base. Jason actually recommends a documentary that you'll acyually have to track down because he leaves out all most every important detail. You want details? It's not that kind of podcast.

Enjoy the show!

FSGM 28: Just when you thought it was safe...

Hey there everybody. We are back! While the argument never quite reaches Orca proportions, it is obvious we don't agree on one of the following features. Never the less, we cover them with the same passionate discourse you've come to expect from FSGM. Filled with ambient chatter and background effects from special guest, famed foley artist Haywood Jebloamie, it's like having Matt and Jason right in your own home instead of the extremely professional studio atmosphere that most "real" podcasts try to present. And since I'm writing this, it's only fair to warn you, Matt is full of crap and I am right.
See (hear) for yourself!
Cheers,

Jason

Hello 2012!

In a return nearly overshadowed by a Ferris Bueller Super Bowl commercial teaser, we are older, wiser, and less focused. Impossible you say? Well listen for yourself! It’s a spectacularly disorganized, just under 90 minute tribute to 2011. While Jason constantly interrupts Matt, our erstwhile duo cough and sputter their way through an exponentially growing list of movie only barely tethered to the concept of a year end wrap up show. Here is only a small sample of the films covered.

Attack the Block

Point Blank

Red State

Poltergiest III(?)

Oh, which trailers to post?

FSGM 25, that's almost a 3rd of the way to our 100th episode!

Well the output is mere a trickle. However, what we lack in quantity we make up for in attitude! Did you think I was going to say quality? Hey, there's reviews of Tucker and Dale Vs Evil, Final Destination 5, and some movie Matt saw on some website. We spout more stuff about about how, in general, remakes suck. And then there is all dancing, so much dancing, crammed into another action packed installment of the little podcast that could. There was no dancing.

Eat 'em up, yum!

Truly,
Jason

Episode 24. Sorry about the Wait.

...hey everyone.
Sorry about the wait.
Between benders and Jason buying a house. (And all the sweet stuff on TV) We've been busy. (Oh, and the Fat and Skinny flying film fortress...we've also been building one of those.)
So we're sorry about the wait.

In the absence we have been watching watching HELLA.
I, personally, have gone from Vincent Price, to William Castle, to haunted house films, to gothic horror, to Amicus. (With Tombs of the Dead 1-4 and Tremors 1-4 thrown somewhere in the middle)

I consider this KLASSIC Fat and Skinny. With nothing prepared or written down...and movies coming at you so fat and furious you'll pop a Paul Walker.
So naturally we get into House on Haunted Hill(it's a perfect movie)...but, I posted that on our facebook. But we also get into BUG. (cuzz, maaaaaaaaaan, it's go me Buggin').
And that was produced by William Castle. So I think we're cool.
Then, Jason put's the Stathem's 'Mechanic' in his sights...
(this part of the show is less comeback, and more call back...as we did a turn on Bronson's 'Mechanic' in Episode 19)

...so I have a new love... her name is Mandy Lane.
and, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane
...and then, for some reason, we get into Dead Heat. Go fig.
...yeah, that's not blurry at all.

Anyhoo, if you listen closely you can hear Jason's lovely wife Jen in with some solids points. How she puts up with us idiots is beyond me.

Well, I gotta jet.
Touch of Evil is playing at The Red Vic in an hour.
Man, I'm gonna miss that theatre when she's gone.

sorry about the wait
listen here!

Episode 23. It's a cosmic coincidence.

...did you know that the number 23 is linked to all manner of cosmic co-ink-i-dinks. It's true(ish). Look it up.

And speaking of cosmic...it's another 'Spacey' episode of Fat and Skinny. And I ain't talkin' Kevin.

Ya see, I was sooooooooooo pumped to talk about Scream 4 I forgot to mention actually why it really is so awesome. I'd like to blame these slips of the mind on my desperate attempt NOT to spoil the intro to Scream 4. It really is a hoot, and sets the tone to the whole film. However, the surprise is almost everything.
Anyhoo, I fumbled and in doing so forgot to mention some stuff...
First, (and this is actually super embarrassing ) my real good buddy (and occasional Fat and Skinny commenter) Jeremy Wheeler had a bunch of his rock posters featured in the film. (You can even see them in the trailer...see below) I was more than stoked to see so much his work in the movie. So super proud of the dude. And I forget. Put it in my show notes. And I forget. (But, you should see my notes.)
I'm sorry buddy. That's a 'my bad'. However, I'm still super stoked and proud of the fella. Go here and check out his work. Stella!
http://jeremywheeler.net/
Second, unlike Scream 1 and 2,(i can't recall 3) Scream 4 seems to mimic different visual styles from all sorts of various sub-genres. There seems like bits Final Destination, Texas Chainsaw, the Chainsaw re-make, and numerous direct to disc teen bodycount films. If you know 'film' (and by which, i mean, genre) it adds to that layer of how we perceive our media. It also adds that 'rap battle' attitude that seems to recall Cravens earlier career.
(The whole Jaws to Hills Have Eyes to Evil Dead to Nightmare on Elm Street back to Evil Dead II) By the end of the film you almost get the feeling Craven is saying, "Ya know what...I started something." Then by    emulating all the various styles it proves to all the young Turks out there that have been biting the Scream formula that he can do it that way too.
Hmmmmm, maybe it's just a message to every director in the game...'that's not not snarky, meta-commentary on media through horror, THIS is snarky, meta-commentary on media through horror.'
...but in case you want an 80's slasher from the 80's...it doesn't get more 80's than this...
Happy Birthday to Me
...speaking of perception. You can't tell a book by the cover in Simon Rumley's...
Red, White, and Blue
...speaking of red, white, and blue... we also manage to squeeze in an Australian film... or favorite past time...
Harlequin!

...N that's about it.
Join us next time when we talk about movies.
Always with the movies.

Cheers,
Matt DeLight 2011

Episode 22. Straight to your Heart.

...I don't have whole lot of time here. As I'm currently transforming my room so that it looks like an 'Enchantment Under the Sea' prom. It's my girlfriends birthday...and I'm a total swat. And I don't have a lot of time.
Which gives me zero time to explain our hiatus. What can I say. We love vacation.
Oh, and if it seems as if we more fired up than usual. It's cuzzed we recorded the episode right after we deleted the episode we just recorded. Ya know...the ol' Fat and Skinny curse.
Here's the movies...or the trailers, to the movies that we talk about... oh... you know drill.

Anyhoo, speaking of proms... Cabin Fever 2
Speaking of twos....Exorcist 2
Ok...so that's not the trailer at all. But, If that doesn't sell you on this...well... sheeeeeeeeeeit.
Speaking of shit and taking number 2's....Jason sure didn't cotton to well to Skyline.
And last but not least...Rubber. Hopefully after girlfriend see's this room ... I'll get ta wear a couple.
Sure...they're cheap jokes. But, what do you expect from a dude who's hella broke.
....yeah, another ace episode.
OK... they balloons ain't gonna blow themselves up.
Cheers.

Episode 21...Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Moustache.

...So Again. Here we are. At yet another episode. And again...we drink not beer...but Root Beer. Oh, and whiskey. I was drinking alot and alot of whiskey. (See if you can't spot the exact moment that I am drunk)

So the Root Beer I was drinking was Virgils...to be exact, (if you were interested)...and, it's hells of delicious. No one is paying me to say that (yet)... just thought you'd like ta know.

On to the movies. The glorious, glorious movies.
As our 'Par Usual', we are all over the map. But, it does seem to me that we manage a pretty awesome theme. And that theme happens to be, Awesome Moustache. I have finally come to grips that I, myself, will never be able to grow an awesome moustache, or ride a faux fixie, or even ferry folks across the Rio Grande on a barge... I can only experience these pleasures from afar. From the comfort of the video screen I live through these dreams. I am a far cry from the hipster my father was and wanted me to be.
Here's the trailers to this episode.
Please, don't look me in the eyes.

The first clip is from Barquero. It's not the trailer...I couldn't find it...but, then again...I didn't look very hard. Rather this is one persons favorite clips from the movie...I think. It's the whole movie in under 10 minutes...but, I don't agree 100% with the choice of scenes...but hell, that's this movie in a nut shell...once you see it, you can't help but spend more time with it than it deserves. Lee Van Cliff= Awesome Moustache.
Have you seen Animal Kingdom? Do you like crime movies? Can you just fucking watch this already so we can talk about the ending. Also, Guy Pearce = Awesome Moustache.
Then Quicksilver. Bacon is Eggs. When his world gets scrambled, he turns to the only thing he can trust.  His bike, and freedom!!!! But after Voodoo get wacked, will that be enough to save Tiny, Teddy Bear, and Airborne from the clutches of Gypsy!
~And if that kind of incoherent talk can get yer butt into a movie, than you are sure to enjoy this....cuzz it doesn't make a heap of sense. It's like a mystery, inside a box, inside enigma, wrapped around a middle finger. So fun. I just want to hug this movie and tell it it's beautiful.
Saving the best for last. Kevin Bacon=Awesome Moustache. Actually, he's King 'Stache. We bow before him and buckle at his wake.
...mmmmmmm.....bacon moustache.

Top ten when we were 20!

Here is a really long episode, busted into two parts, where we tell you what our favorite movies when we were 20. For Jason it was '89-'90, Matt was '95-'96. Some real powerhouse selections are covered. Get yer pens out, because if you haven't seen these you should. I think it really paints a pretty accurate portrait of us as we enter the most formative of film buff years. At 20, it appears that we both were becoming tired of the standard Hollywood dreck and began to break out and seek new and more exciting film avenues. We  were hungry for Asian Extreme, B-Movie Actioners, Art House, and just about anything we could find. You know how it is when you just can't get enough of whatever it is you need. Anyway, here is part 1, 2 is right on it's heels.

- Jason
