Episode 35...back on the wagon.

Hey Hey! Welcome back Fat and Skinny fans. Episode 35 marks a new landmark in Fat and Skinny history. This is the first episode where we recorded from two separate, remote, locations!!!! Sure this technology has been around for a while, but our film fortresses only just got internet...so there ya go. Sounds pretty good all things considered...and let's face it, we really don't want you guys to grow accustomed to a certain style of recording.
This is also the episode where we seem to fall right off the wagon, but that should be fairly obvious right off the bat. And speaking of bats...wait, I'm getting ahead of myself.
First, we get into Season of the Witch (the Nic Cage version) If you ask me, we spend more time on it than it deserves. (That's one of the first scooby clues that we're loaded) However, I would say we were talking less about the movie, and more about Nicolas Cage, the man. We are into enigmas here at Fat and Skinny. If only Uwe Boll would direct a Cage video game, superhero movie. (With Ron Perlman...the newest FSGM movie crush)

(I'm saying watch the Romero Season of the Witch...and Knowing)

Cage may be a batty actor. That's why we love him. Speaking of bats...finally. We get to Chosen Survivors. The 1974 post apocalyptic, animal attacks film. With bats. It rules. It seems to have Panos Cosmatos fingerprints all over it.

The whole movie is up on Youtube. It was also teamed up on DVD with The Earth Dies Screaming. (Because both movies were written by Harry Spalding)

Harry Spalding did NOT write The Last Days of Planet Earth. I just happened to watch that movie after Chosen Survivors at The Vortex Room. It's a Toho production. I dug it. I was pretty boozie.

And to bookend with the concept of the right film for the right time...we present Pop Skull!(directed by Adam Wingard)The Southern fried, J-Ho, post-psych drug movie. The Ring meets Enter the Void...on 2000 dollars.

It's a wild one.

Yup, it's another signature episode alright.

Episode 34

WHOA! Listen to those mics courtesy of SomaFM. We just keep getting gooder and gooder still. Heck, at this rate, by next episode we'll be great. Until that time, you have this Gem Mint 10er  of marvelous movie madness to plug up yer ear holes.
I mean, we don't get all the facts right. And sometimes kinda forget the plot points of the film. But, that's because we saw that stuff over two weeks ago. And I ask you, how can you possibly think coherently about a Uwe Boll film when yer too busy thinking about the man himself. (Which is the exact reason that we are the affectionately known as 'little podcast that could'.)

Anyhoo, on to the movies/trailers. Obviously, we get into a little Boll. This time it's the 2007 classic In The Name of The King:A Dungeon Siege Tale. Some things we forgot to mention on the show. Ron Perlman. 'Farmer' is a boomerang expert. (Yup.) Plus, weird forest guardians. Seriously, this will turn your brain into Pinheads Puzzle Box.

I only watched the first 20 and the last 10 minutes. Maybe that's how it should be watched. The in between bits can be cobbled together watching the trailer.

And then I talk totally incoherently about some old dusty movies. Like this one! I Bury the Living. (the original. Not the 2008 re-make?!?!) Two more things on this one....1. the caretaker did NOT do it. 2. Fuck Inception

Or this one...The Queen of Blood. It's got the Hop, man...the Hop!

Oh...and we talk big, big, Drive-In style action! Like Red Dawn.Yeah...the new one. I very well might stand alone on this one, because let's face it, it's kinda shitty. But, I liked it a whole heap anyway.

And last, but not least...MORE STATHAM!!! Now, I don't think that Statham is always a 'safe' bet...(see Bank Job) ...but, you can bet on Safe. Now take that to the bank.

Episode 24. Sorry about the Wait.

...hey everyone.
Sorry about the wait.
Between benders and Jason buying a house. (And all the sweet stuff on TV) We've been busy. (Oh, and the Fat and Skinny flying film fortress...we've also been building one of those.)
So we're sorry about the wait.

In the absence we have been watching watching HELLA.
I, personally, have gone from Vincent Price, to William Castle, to haunted house films, to gothic horror, to Amicus. (With Tombs of the Dead 1-4 and Tremors 1-4 thrown somewhere in the middle)

I consider this KLASSIC Fat and Skinny. With nothing prepared or written down...and movies coming at you so fat and furious you'll pop a Paul Walker.
So naturally we get into House on Haunted Hill(it's a perfect movie)...but, I posted that on our facebook. But we also get into BUG. (cuzz, maaaaaaaaaan, it's go me Buggin').
And that was produced by William Castle. So I think we're cool.

Then, Jason put's the Stathem's 'Mechanic' in his sights...
(this part of the show is less comeback, and more call back...as we did a turn on Bronson's 'Mechanic' in Episode 19)

...so I have a new love... her name is Mandy Lane.

...and then, for some reason, we get into Dead Heat. Go fig.

...yeah, that's not blurry at all.

Anyhoo, if you listen closely you can hear Jason's lovely wife Jen in with some solids points. How she puts up with us idiots is beyond me.

Episode 23. It's a cosmic coincidence.

...did you know that the number 23 is linked to all manner of cosmic co-ink-i-dinks. It's true(ish). Look it up.

And speaking of cosmic...it's another 'Spacey' episode of Fat and Skinny. And I ain't talkin' Kevin.

Ya see, I was sooooooooooo pumped to talk about Scream 4 I forgot to mention actually why it really is so awesome. I'd like to blame these slips of the mind on my desperate attempt NOT to spoil the intro to Scream 4. It really is a hoot, and sets the tone to the whole film. However, the surprise is almost everything.
Anyhoo, I fumbled and in doing so forgot to mention some stuff...
First, (and this is actually super embarrassing ) my real good buddy (and occasional Fat and Skinny commenter) Jeremy Wheeler had a bunch of his rock posters featured in the film. (You can even see them in the trailer...see below) I was more than stoked to see so much his work in the movie. So super proud of the dude. And I forget. Put it in my show notes. And I forget. (But, you should see my notes.)
I'm sorry buddy. That's a 'my bad'. However, I'm still super stoked and proud of the fella. Go here and check out his work. Stella!

Second, unlike Scream 1 and 2,(i can't recall 3) Scream 4 seems to mimic different visual styles from all sorts of various sub-genres. There seems like bits Final Destination, Texas Chainsaw, the Chainsaw re-make, and numerous direct to disc teen bodycount films. If you know 'film' (and by which, i mean, genre) it adds to that layer of how we perceive our media. It also adds that 'rap battle' attitude that seems to recall Cravens earlier career.
(The whole Jaws to Hills Have Eyes to Evil Dead to Nightmare on Elm Street back to Evil Dead II) By the end of the film you almost get the feeling Craven is saying, "Ya know what...I started something." Then by    emulating all the various styles it proves to all the young Turks out there that have been biting the Scream formula that he can do it that way too.
Hmmmmm, maybe it's just a message to every director in the game...'that's not not snarky, meta-commentary on media through horror, THIS is snarky, meta-commentary on media through horror.'

...but in case you want an 80's slasher from the 80's...it doesn't get more 80's than this...

Drop Nineteens? Fucking awesome, right? Well, we just dropped (episode) 19 and it's awesome too.

Totally awesome.
As awesome as the Drop Nineteens tripped-out, early 90's, shoegaze, guitar bliss?
No.
But, what can I say? I really liked the track 'Winona'. Just always reminds me of makin-out with a pretty pretty girl in the park, on a sunny sunny day. Awesome.
Anyway, speaking of awesome make-out sessions...another thing i really like are movies! And listeners, boy howdy did you 'make-out' like a bandit on our lastest, nay I say greatest, episode.
First, we're drunk. So that's back.
We're slower to our points...but, there is more fire in our bellies.(or is that beer in our...) We have also settled on a production schedule, so you fans have that to look forward too. Also, we promised merch, 'real' and not 'no' prizes, more blog posts, tweets,facebook updates, and actual 'Fat and Skinny' events. Some of this will surely happen...others...well, we are nothing if not well intentioned.
And that's not even mentioning THE MOVIES we get into.
Ladies and Gentlemen...hold on to your butts.
First up is Enter The Void. It sez Into the Void on our Itunes. That's because we hate the facts. All the facts!

Also, did you know that Chev Chelios is gonna remake the Bronson movie the Mechanic. Yeah, we don't know exactly how to fell about it either. We watched the original just to prepare. Charles is Brawn's Son.

Next we get onto 'Rapid Fire'. It stars 'The Crow'. I have not seen it...and can't reacall the show...which normally i listen to...but...

Lastest but surely not leastest...we get into The Loved Ones. Not to be confused with Evelyn Waugh's novel that spurred the 1965 movie of the same title. (Which is also amazing...stars a young Jonathan Winters, and is also a movie of high recommendation) No, this is the 2009 Australian teen-torture, future, classic that has flabbed the gaskets of all us here at the FSGM floating movie observatory.

...we've posted it on our facebook, like, twice already...but, dang. Look at that shit. It's Craaaaaaaaaay-zaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!

Fat and Skinny Check Out Cinema by the Bay

Here in SF, it feels as if there is some sort of film festival every weekend. This weekend, however, San Francisco Film Society makes it a little more personal by presenting Cinema by the Bay, a celebration of Bay Area film makers. There are shorts, documentaries, and features, both fiction and non. (Some even have subtitles!) Our friends over at Bay Area Bourgeois have asked us to to take a little time out of our busy, schlocky movie-watching schedule and check out some of the program. We actually got a press kit and our first dvd advance screeners. It’s almost like real live journalism.

Tangerine Dream did the soundtrack to Near Dark...

...not that you would particularly know that if you listened to our podcast. I think we neglected to mention that in the last podcast. Ya know, Episode 14. The episode that talks about Near Dark in extensive detail...and the podcast that loves to talk about Tangerine Dream. Well, we missed it. Sometimes we are the most unorganized movie podcast in history...
However, I am also pretty sure we(well, Jason) has mentioned their musical prowess on Near Dark in a previous episode. Maybe episode 3 or 4...so I really don't feel too bad about it.
I also don't feel too bad about us talking at length about "I Come in Peace" aka Dark Angel. No one is talking about that movie anymore...and I kinda like that. It really is a solid actioner. And again, while I totally screw up the memory of the posters tag-line. (which happens to be the highly terrible/forgettable, "good cop. bad alien. big trouble.") I am just proud of dusting off these old movies, and bringing them back into the awesome floodlight which is Fat and Skinny.
Hell, with our heat, and Hollywood pull...expect to see that shit hit Criterion within the next few months.

...currently on the set of Castlevania. This is the man who only makes the WILD SHIT...and after being on the set of Alien vs. Predator all day, he still found the time to put a baby inside of Milla Jovitch's tummy. He is officially my hero.
